Another Way to Play Quake or Deathmatch with Monsters

Disclaimer (6/09/97): The following document is now, for better or worse, pointless. I have left it on the main menu of QUAKE Things! for the sake of those Quake users who are only now discovering the Shareware version (yes, it still happens). As to the pointlessness of this information (it was relevant at one point), let me state that with the introduction of Quake-C, real solo deathmatch is now possible. There are now several exceptionally cool Quakebot patches that will allow you to play against devious CPU-controlled opponents (bots) without ever going online. Best part: no lag…

Disclaimer (7/31/96): The following document makes no claims as to the safety of this procedure. It describes causes and effects that were simply discovered by accident and may or may not affect the integrity of your copy of Quake; this "hack" (for lack of a better word, considering the commands used are not described in any official capacity by id Software) has never caused any problems, either for myself, or for others who have tried it. It does work with two players via modem (other modes, such as direct connect and LANs have not bee tested).

QUICK START:

Run Quake.

Hit the <ESC> key and select MULTIPLAYER from the menu.

Select NEW GAME

Select MODEM or DIRECT

Select OK from the communications configuration screen

Ensure that the following settings are active:

  • Any number of players
  • Deathmatch on
  • The teamplay/difficulty settings you desire (Hard or Nightmare recommended)
  • Starting level is Welcome to Quake

Select BEGIN GAME

At this point you will materialize in the entrance to Quake

Run to the slipgate for the episode you want to play and bring down the console (~)

Enter the following command:

coop 1 <enter>

Now when you enter the slipgate the game will change into a cooperative style of play, complete with monsters, while retaining many deathmatch characteristics (frag counts, ability to pick up your dropped backpacks, etc).

Note about difficulty - this hack allows you to always reincarnate (restart after you die) with any weapons, ammo, and armor you had when you exited the Welcome to Quake level. You have a choice to make - when you start this procedure, you can roam around the Welcome to Quake level collecting weapons and ammunition - even waiting for the items to respawn. Or, you can simply go to the episode you want to play, enter the console command, and hop through the slipgate. You will then have to gather weapons and armor as they appear throughout that episode's levels (this makes this mode of play more challenging). The choice is yours. Remember that arming yourself isn't exactly necessary, considering that after you reincarnate, it is a simple matter to go to your place of death and retrieve any ammo you dropped. Dying becomes beneficial -- if you can ignore the negative frag count displayed on your screen!

BRIEF NOTES FOR THE UNINITIATED

Some interesting facets of Quake are only seen in Deathmatch play (via the Internet, direct modem link, or over a LAN). For instance, in solo, or single player mode, when the player dies, unless he or she has saved their game at some point, they lose access to any weapons they had accumulated in the level, as well as any ammo, armor, or powerups; monsters also reincarnate, and you have to battle them all over again. In Deathmatch mode, weapons, ammunition, and even powerups reappear after an interval of time, meaning even death cannot stop you from amassing a huge arsenal once more. Of course, in Deathmatch, there are no monsters - unless you include humans with a rabid thirst for digital blood in your definition of monsters.

This simple Quake hack allows you to play a different style of solo play, similar to playing a cooperative game alone. Monsters do not regenerate after you die and you can reincarnate with any weapons and ammo you had with you when you entered the level. It does make the game easier, but it totally eliminates the need to save your game - and if you've attempted to play The Elder World (episode 4) on Hard or Nightmare difficulty, you know that saving your game becomes a very regular occurrence - far too regular for some people, in fact!
